What is The Pattern? (revisited) C for Confirmation

"A pattern has an integrity independent of the medium by virtue of which you have received the information that it exists. Each of the chemical elements is a pattern integrity. Each individual is a pattern integrity. The pattern integrity of the human individual is evolutionary and not static."
R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983), U.S.American philosopher and inventor, in Synergetics: Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking (1975), Pattern Integrity 505.201
The second-ever post to this blog, what is a patternist?, was my impromptu attempt to describe the overwhelming depth of the perpetual research that my colleagues and I have dedicated so much time to. After watching last night's episode of NBC's Heroes, I felt the need to revisit that description. At the risk of playing into an over-abused cliche, I'm going to Webster for this one.

From Merriam-Webster Online;
"4: a natural or chance configuration; pattern of events>
7: a reliable sample of traits, acts, tendencies, or other observable characteristics of a person, group, or institution
10: a discernible coherent system based on the intended interrelationship of component parts
11: frequent or widespread incidence; pattern of dissent> pattern of violence>"
The purpose of this website has been to point out the occurrences of particular patterns that, as Fuller stated, transcend the medium of that initial element that brings the existence of that pattern to light. A mouthful, I know, but the last few posts are a great example; in the last full post, the pattern of the red robot was brought to light by a Nintendo commercial that just happened to feature Beyonce, an artist I associated with artificial intelligence in great depth long before I ever saw the commercial, and just happened to show a robot that turns red. This, in addition to some undeniably Witchblade-esque Ciara cover art, reminded me of an image of a red robot carrying r&b artist Ciara that I saw on a YouTube video analyzing Ciara and her connection to the "Robot Agenda", as it were. As I began to document these connections, I came across dozens of articles and blogs connecting Ciara to Beyonce, and more than a few of them mentioned the costume designer Theirry Mugler. Then I went to Mugler's website and saw the perfume "Angel" which had been featured in an ad my co-contributor emailed me (because of reflection imagery already mentioned) weeks before I even began to analyze Beyonce and her robots.

The Pattern began with a commercial, but after a little research, the connections transcended pop music, or video games, or film, or even wide-scale globalist agenda. The pattern transcended the research itself, and began to poke it's head out in the goings on of my daily life. The pattern transcended the time in which the actual research occurred, reaching backwards into previous patterns I'd written about and to films of the 1920's, while simultaneously reaching forward into connections that I hadn't even realized were there under my nose, into patterns that I had yet to see.

But I'm getting ahead of myself... Heroes:

The reason I felt the need to revisit the concept of The Pattern came while watching "I Am Sylar", episode 24 of the third season of Heroes. Overlooking the recent significance of 3's in my research, I noticed that episode 24 aired on April 20th, 024 on 420, and that the episode was titled I AM, reflecting the self-affirming naming device seen in Beyonce's I Am... Sasha Fierce, Madonna's new documentary I Am Because We Are (watch in full), Will Smith's uniquely-titled I Am Legend, and the translation of the Hebrew name for God, Yahweh (I am that I am).

The phrase I Am is the recognition of the self, the I (the eye), or the Ego, and such recognition is a tell-tale sign of self-awareness.

But again, I digress.

The episode focuses on a reccuring villain named Gabriel Gray (remember the angel Gabriel from Angels and Aliens) who calls himself Sylar, and is by far the most powerful character in the show's cast. Sylar is played by Zachary Quinto, the actor set to play the iconic Cmdr Spock in J.J. Abram's Bad Robot remake of Star Trek. The casting choice couldn't have been more perfect.

blue one-eye right, red feminine left

As a side note, Spock is known for his trademark "Live Long and Prosper" hand sign, the Vulcan salute, reflecting the sacred V and, by extension, the color red (see Few Shots to Shaman's study on the V and the Egg/Ego for more). The one time-traveler on Heroes, Hiro Nakamura, is a huge fan of Star Trek, and the show's producers make no secret of his affinity for the V-sign.

On Heroes, Sylar can read, understand and even steal the DNA of other characters, in turn taking their supernatural abilities, and has recently gained the ability to shapeshift. Because of this new ablity, he begins to have an identity crisis. He spends the episode conversing with the spirit of his deceased mother, who is actually a product of his own fractured psyche; an alter-Ego.

Sylar remembers stabbing MoMs in the heart

Dead Momma Sylar forgives her son with a halo behind her head

After much debate with his MoM/Ego(egg)/Self, Sylar eventually forgives himself for his mother's accidental murder. Mother Sylar tells him he could be anything, "even President of the United States", so Sylar takes the form of Nathan Petrelli, a super-powered senator with the gift of flight (Superman working for the government), and holds a press conference in which he promises to bring "real change" to Washington.

Sylar plays a Senator...

...as the real senator watches from the checkerboard

Alongside this identity realization, another type of self-affirmation occurs. Ando Masahashi, a character who has spent three seasons as a sidekick to the time-traveling Hiro Nakamura, chooses a superhero name for himself. The name he chooses for his alter-Ego is Crimson Arc.

A red C turned sideways forms a crimson arch. The researcher who introduced me to -and coined the term- synchromysticism, Jake Kotze, recently put together a video analysis of the pattern of the Arch in his own research, and connected the Red-C to the Red Eye, reflecting the red eye-Ego connections that started showing up in my Beyonce-bot studies.

Over at Jake's blog, The Blob, the work done here at The Patternist was first referenced in a post called C-ing Red. The inspiration for my Angels and Aliens post came from artwork showing Ciara as Super-C in red armor. Are you seeing a pattern yet?

The first Red Si at CentrePortal

Red Si shoutout at The Blob

C-ing Ciara in Red at The Patternist

These connections are not arbitrary, and therefore cannot be simply dismissed as coincidence. A coincidence is a connection that occurs by chance, without any deeper meaning. The choice to name Ando's character Crimson Arc had specific meaning, as did all the other references to the color red, the eye and the letter C. The pattern's significance doesn't come from the acknowledgment of the repetition, it comes from the shared meaning. The I-Self-Ego is hypocritically both a unique perspective and a part of the All-Pattern/Collective Conciousness. The theme of the I-self contradiction, the self-seeing Ego Eye, transcends all these fields and media and spins a complex narrative that cannot exist randomly. As Webster put it, "a discernible coherent system based on the intended interrelationship of component parts." This pattern is intentional and so is its meaning.

Who, or what, then, is responsible for that intent?
God? The Universe?
Who is creating this pattern?

Oh, right. I am.

Rhythm Heaven, Red Robots, Angels and Aliens (Updated - In Flux)

Say what you will about the hypnotic corruption of our youth, or the over-sexualization of pop music, or the robot agenda... Beyonce is just plain adorable. Just try and analyze that commercial without crackin a smile. Wanna hear something really crazy? The point in the commercial where she screams in sync with a game character(you can hear it), in effect, becoming one of the game characters, happens at exactly 0:23. Such pleasant distractions feed our hypnosis. A spoonful of sugar...

...and I suppose the split-second screenshot of the robot-building mini-game -given the last post's analysis of the Beyonce-bot- was just a happy coincidence. Beyonce actually messed up on this part of the game; if you hit the timing right, the robot turns red.

The Rhythm Heaven Red Robot showed up again when I tried to listen to my new favorite online music service, Pandora (Vouch).

Can't escape it. It's worth noting that Nintendo's two big moneymakers are now the new DSi and the Wii, the new I and the We, the new eye... the we is the new eye....

"...The single new feature [two mini-cameras] promised in the DSi — as in "eye," or "individualization" — sounded like a throwaway gimmick..."

Same red robot, same golden eyes... I just keep telling myself;
it's just a coincidence, it's just a coincidence, it's just a coincidence...

Ciara / Super-C / Red C / Red Robot

Ciara takes the hand of her red robot

Ciara Princess Harris (actual name), commonly known as the pop-princess Ciara, is expected to drop her third studio album, Fantasy Ride this year on May 5th (5-5-09). Ciara turned 23 last October, and has since been promoting a new persona for her album. The album features the official debut of her robotic, comic-inspired alter-ego, Super-C. This is Super-C:

Is that the Lasso of Truth she's holding?

The above image was part of an email I received from my co-contributor, SketcherX, last night that added even deeper significance to this pop princess pattern kick that I've been on, and even points to the recent prevalence of the Red "C" (Red Sea/Red See/Red Eye) symbolism analysis in the blogs of fellow researchers and hinted to at the end of Ego Eye, Idol Hand, Robot Heart. The red "armor" she wears immediately brought to mind the Witchblade comic (notice the red/blue color contrast)...

Um... moving right along...

The name Ciara also made me think of Sierra, the word assigned to the letter "S" in the NATO phonetic alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, tango, etc...). FOX's new Joss Whedon production, Dollhouse, uses the NATO alphabet as codenames for it's sleeper agents, and Sierra is the codename of the mind-wiped female assassin co-starring with Eliza Dushku (codenamed Echo). Eliza got her first big TV break playing a vampire slayer named Faith on Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Faith joined the cast as Buffy's dark reflection, her polar opposite, her free-spirited twin... her first appearance was in "Faith, Hope & Trick" (season 3, episode 3). Over at Pseudo-Occult Media, Ben Singleton put together a great post on the Dollhouse that further inspired my next post on Dushku and The Eye's Jessica Alba as blind dark angels (see previous posts for more on The Eye).

The Dollhouse Cast, with Sierra lookin mean front left

In the show, Sierra, played by Dichen Lachman, has always stood out to me because of her striking -yet alien- features. Lachman has Australian and Tibetan roots.

...gone bad

In the third episode of the first season of Dollhouse entitled "Stage Fright", Sierra is programmed to be the number one fan of a suicidal, over-sexualized pop megastar named Rayna Russel (Rayna-Rihanna/Rain/RR) to distract an obsessed fan planning to assassinate Rayna onstage. Curious.

(Robby) Robots and Angels

"Morbius' nineteen-year-old daughter Altaira (Anne Francis) appears. Like Shakespeare's Miranda, she has grown up not knowing any man except her father and is therefore very curious to learn about human relations. Several officers and men are more than willing to help with her education, but Adams keeps them in line, much to Altaira's puzzlement.

Morbius tells Adams he has been reconstructing the history and science of the Krell, the long-extinct natives, who had possessed a technology and society one million years ahead of that of humanity, but had all died 200,000 years before in a single night of inexplicable destruction. He shows his guests what he calls a "plastic educator". His first use of it put him into a coma for almost two days, but also doubled his intellect, enabling him to build Robby and the rest of the wondrous devices. Morbius also takes them on a tour of a vast cube-shaped underground Krell installation, 20 miles on a side and powered by 9,200 thermonuclear reactors, which has been operating and self-repairing since the extinction of the Krell. When asked its purpose, Morbius is evasive."

alter(ed)-ego

The dual-personality album idea isn't exclusively a Beyonce-Ciara thing, we've seen it in artists like David Bowie, Eminem, Janet Jackson and even lil' Miley Cyrus. Beyonce and Ciara just happen to be both doing it the same way at the same time, right now. The undeniable similarities between C's split-personality publicity stunt and Beyonce's twin campaign have not gone unnoticed by the pop music blogosphere. More than a few articles have used side-by-side comparisons of the two artist's videos to bring attention to the synchs;

Kylie Minogue, again. Nice shades.

"Apparently, the 23-year-old singer was so desperate to duplicate Beyonce’s success with her latest video, the Timberlake-fueled 'Love Sex Magick,' that she managed to infiltrate Beyonce’s wardrobe — jacking animal-print catsuits, window treatment-inspired shades, and blond afro wigs left and right. The Queen of Crunk & B [Ciara] even recruited an insider from Mrs. Carter’s [Beyonce's] camp — a shady backup dancer/informant — to feed her stolen moves."

Beyonce caught in a web and Ciara doin the glove thing

The Super-C character is actually "born" in Ciara's video collaboration with T-Pain; hyp-pop's Mr. Roboto. Many Thanks goes out to my favorite new YouTube patternist, PimPb1420 for bringing this one to light (from his amazing Madonna and Beyonce Ritual series). Anyone up for another game of "How Many Synchs Can You Spot?" can see the video, entitled "Go Girl", here (Ciara transforms in a rising elevator and T-Pain claims to have an IQ of 42, just to name a few...).

three robot women, two of them blind

I would've embedded it, but all versions I found on YouTube were embed-blocked. Anyways, here's Behind-the-Scenes clip explaining SuperC, along with PimP1420's analysis of Ciara's vid . . .

demonic robotic posession and rebirth

[Beyonce's kitty kat video]

Ciara speaking on her alter ego:
“When I’m performing, I’m just having fun, letting go and not even trying to think too much about what’s going on . . .You become another person. Another person inside of me totally surfaces when it comes to performing - Ciara, buh-bye, all right Super C. Super C . . . that is my alter ego. Super C doesn’t hold back. She is definitely aggressive. She goes hard. Super C can do some magical and funky things . . . She dances to the 10th power. She does everything to the 10th power.”

Sounds a lot like Beyonce's reasoning behind the Sasha Fierce persona. And beyond the conceptual copycating; why now? Why would two major artists in the same field push the same gimmick at the same time? Just coincidence, right? Beyonce on her split persona:

"Sasha Fierce is the fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken side and more glamorous side that comes out when I'm working and when I'm on the stage . . . I have someone else that takes over when it's time for me to work and when I'm on stage, this alter ego that I've created that kind of protects me and who I really am."

The two artists share the same costume designer; Thierry Mugler, the man behind Sasha Fierce's famous robotic concert costumes previously mentioned in my last post (and the Wonder Woman - Cheetah red/blue outfit below).

Beyonce and Kylie Minogue as matching fembots

From Metropolis; a robot named Mary

"My references were clearly inspired from shows that I’ve actually seen. It goes to show how creative we can be and how close the worlds are. I did my first video with my metal outfit. I was inspired by Thierry Mugler. Now, from my understanding, Beyonce is using Thierry Mugler for her tour. It just is what it is."
-Ciara to Honey Magazine

Nice name drop. Thierry Mugler was responsible for Beyonce's, goat-headed, heart-headlight breastplate from her new album's liner photos -easily the most eye-catching ensemble on that photoshoot- as well as Madonna's world-famous "pointy bra" costume. The black-and-white photography was color-treated to emphasize the flames and the red and blue paint job.

The image below was sent to me by SketcherX on his plane ride to the future (a.k.a. a two-week trip to Japan); it's an ad from the back of an in-flight magazine for a perfume called Angel, being marketed by -you guessed it- Thierry Mugler.

Outside of the obvious mirror imagery in the magazine ad, the model appears to be frozen, or made of ice, contrasting the above reference to a woman on fire (red/blue), while also resonating the Ice Queen from C.S. Lewis' Narnia and the recently suicidal Ali Larter as Tracy Strauss from NBC's medium-transcending mega-hit, Heroes (where she was another one of three sacred twin sisters). Ali Larter's next film is Obsessed, a Fatal Attraction for the hip-hop generation, with Beyonce Knowles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_Snap_(Heroes)

Speaking of Angels, the same year that Tilda Swinton, the actress behind the Ice Queen, starred in the first Narnia (2005), she also played the androgynous angel Gabriel in Constantine, a film that get's plenty of mention on this blog. Androgyny is yet another concept that shows up in both Beyonce and Ciara's recent videos, strangely enough. Beyonce's first single from I Am... Sasha Fierce was called "If I Were A Boy", and mimicked Ciara's previous release, "Like A Boy". Subtle, right?

Shia Lebouf. Again.

Mugler is also peddling a fragrance called Alien (Angel/Alien, Good Girl/Bad Girl, Divine/Possessed, Fire/Ice). Remember, the Witchblade technology is an alien technology according to the story, and the sentient symbiotic ooze worn by the villain Carnage, Spiderman's arch-nemesis Venom, and -as seen in Spiderman 3- Spiderman himself, is alien.

Interesting packaging (purple octagon, red+blue, and three gold claws), and eerie advertising...
